Ever since I bought my 1979 Grumman Tiger in 2002, I have wanted to take it on a journey across the country. The trip will begin and end at Montgomery Field in San Diego. The plan is to go as far as New Jersey, down to south Florida, and back to San Diego with lots of stops in between for a total of about 5500 nautical miles. The itinerary will highly depend on weather, but hopefully I'll be able to leave on Sept. 9, stop everywhere on my list and return home by Sept. 28.
Grumman Tiger N3SK
N3SK was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1979 as Gulfstream American AA-5B Tiger, registration number N4538V. Tigers were originally developed and manufactured by Grumman American, yet although the manufacturing rights and tooling were sold to Gulfstream in 1978, the '79s are also referred to as "Grummans." This model of airplane and its slightly modified successor, the AG-5B, have been manufactured on-and-off since 1975. The latest company to produce the airplanes, Tiger Aircraft, LLC, folded recently, but plans are in the works to buy the company's assets and resurrect the Tiger production line.
Thanks to a recent paint job and permission from the FAA, the plane looks like new and sports a new, vanity registration number. N3SK is a four-seat, fixed-gear, bonded aluminum airplane, powered by a 180 hp Lycoming four-cylinder, normally-aspirated engine. The engine and accessories, propeller, flight instruments and avionics have all been replaced within the last six years. The plane typically flies at speeds between 120 and 130 knots, but is capable of reaching 139 knots (160 mph) in normal cruise flight.

- I earned my private pilot license on a rainy Friday the 13th in December of 1991. I later obtained an instrument rating after getting fed up with being stuck on the ground too often due to the common morning and afternoon low clouds (aka "marine layer") in San Diego.
